The aim of this challenge was to encourage our members to push their boundaries as modern quilters. Participants were given a small bundle of fabrics – black, white and four shades of grey – and challenged to make a mini quilt. The quilters could add one other colour if they wished.
We are delighted with the results. The range of ideas, creativity, skill and variety of techniques show how interesting and fun modern quilting can be.
This is the first of a series of posts about our mini quilts challenge.
Would you like to join us? We are looking for a few new recruits. For more details, please have a look at our Membership Page

Fade to Grey – Helen Hope
After a six week online portrait workshop with American Quilter Luke Haynes, this challenge gave me the inspiration to create an image of Steve Strange, singer in 1980’s ‘New Romantic’ band Visage whose big hit was Fade to Grey. I think my fifteen year old self would have approved.

New York Beauty – Mary Emmens
I have always wanted to make one of these but not a big one, this block was perfect for the challenge. The block is made using foundation paper piecing technique but also appears improvised and scrappy with a number of fabrics in the background and binding.

Mend – Denise Gould
Using techniques learned in a Nicholas Ball workshop, this quilt is inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi. Broken pottery is mended with gold, making the shattered piece even more beautiful. Improv piecing with inserted strips. Quilted with metallic thread in a pattern appropriately named Shattered.
Part 2 will be published next week!
Beautiful examples. Just the ticket showing the different possibilities with few fabrics.Thank you for sharing.
