Mini quilt challenge – part 2

This is the second in a series of posts about our Mini Quilt challenge. For details of the challenge, see the first post here!

My Guiding StarKate Webber
Representing honour and protection, the Lone Star design is often used by the Lakota (Sioux) people to symbolise protection on the recipient’s journey through life.  My Lone Star was machine pieced using 1 inch strips and a ruler. The gradient of colours creates movement and almost a 3D effect.

Improv TrianglesMolly Miller
I decided to try some improv triangles after taking part in Nicholas Ball’s “Shoal” workshop.  The tails of the fish in his quilt are triangles and after the class, I couldn’t quite remember how to do them.  Making 11 improv triangles for this mini quilt was perfect practice to consolidate the technique!

TransparenciesDana Kahana
In this mini quilt I used the piecing technique I learned from Carolina Oneto, to create an effect of the transparent shades of grey that look as if they are on top of each other. I wanted to quilt it in a way that will not take away from the effect so I chose spiral quilting.

Pearl Luxe TwistFrances Grice
My monochrome mini quilt is inspired by Mirror Mirror by Donna Jordan and Pearl Lux by Heidi Pridemore. I love the 3D effect.  I was working on this when we sadly lost Queen Elizabeth so my purple flashes in the border felt right as a small tribute to Her Majesty.

That’s all for this week! Come back next week for part 3, or you can subscribe to our site (on the Home page) to receive posts by email.
