The third in our series of posts on our Fade to Grey mini quilt challenge.

Hot Spot – Lesley Wilkins
Traditionally pieced mini quilt using the bargello technique but pushing the boundaries by including ¾ inch strips. Machine appliqued hot pink circles added to give a contrast of colour and shape. Inspired by an online sewing course by Phillipa Naylor.

DNA Fingerprinting –Melanie Turbitt
The image on this quilt is a replica of the x-ray film used by Alec Jeffreys to determine the true parentage of Andrew Sarbah in the first legal application of DNA fingerprinting. Foundation paper pieced.

The Lighthouse – Cari Dennis
My husband works in an alternative education setting where they provide education and nurturing for young people who have been lost within mainstream education. The centre is aptly called “The Lighthouse”. I designed the foundation paper pattern myself and machine quilted it with metallic threads.

Wonky Circles
Kate Webber
Free-hand curves were cut and machine sewn together to form quarter circles. The colour placement was largely determined by the size of the fabric I had so it is entirely random. Machine quilting was used to add interest and knock back fabrics that appeared too dominant in the finished design.

Stripe Play – Kathryn Edwards
Experimenting with a Mini Hex N’More ruler in the controlled monochrome palette became an improv striped play with pops of colour, and negative space. Machine pieced and quilted with needleturn appliqué.
