Mini quilt challenge – part 4

The fourth in our series of posts on our Fade to Grey mini quilt challenge.

I am delighted to say that our challenge quilts will be displayed at the Craft 4 Crafters exhibition at Westpoint in Exeter, 4-6 April 2024, along with other modern quilts made by our talented members. Hope to see you there!

Queen Of ClubsDenise Gould
Inspired by a set of Miller Goodman playing cards, I loved the strong, warrior-like expression of this queen.  Curved piecing and applique, hand quilted to give texture.  My next challenge is to make a quilt portraying a complete card.

Going round in circlesMolly Miller
I wanted to practice needle turn applique on curves and hand quilting. I tried to use a mixture of contrasting shades in each of the circles within squares.  My applique curves are not perfect, so still room for improvement.  For the hand quilting, I used Aurifil cotton 12 wt, Anchor Pearl and Wonderfil Pearl cotton No. 8.

Lucky SpidersKate Webber
In Victorian times spiders were thought to bring good luck and spider’s webs often featured on quilts.  I randomly cut narrow strips of grey fabrics and pieced them together onto paper triangles.  The triangles were then joined and the paper removed before the quilt was machine quilted.

The Parish LanternHelen Hope
I used needle turn appliqué to create the seas on the moon and free motion quilting for the cratered surface of this old friend, the moon, who I’ve loved staring and smiling at since childhood.
