The second post showing the mini quilts we made for our Inspired by Artists Challenge
Inspired by Terry Frost – Helen Hope

Development of a Square within a Square. This work gave me the opportunity to use some of the skills learnt during an online workshop with Carolina Oneto, one element of which was curved piecing.
I was wasting fabric trying to replicate where the shapes started in the corners of Terry Frost’s work, so used a bit of artist licence, also adding a scrap of patterned fabric. After pondering on how to quilt this, I opted for dense straight line quilting, which I love, on the diagonal using a variegated thread called Marrakesh.
Inspired by Victor Pasmore – Dana Kahana

I was inspired by Spiral Motif in Green, Violet, Blue and Gold: The Coast of the Inland Sea, by Victor Pasmore.
He painted it in 1950, I believe he was inspired by the Cornwall landscape. I was drawn to the colours he used and the sense of movement he captured in this painting.
In my mini quilt I tried to replicate the colours by using similar colours of fabrics. I used 2 threads in the quilting and different thickness of threads as well. The main challenge for me was the free motion quilting of the sky. It was an experiment in trying to control the machine but letting go at the same time.
Inspired by Bridget Riley- Denise Gould

Pink, orange and navy is a favourite colour combination of mine, so I just had to make a quilt inspired by Red with Red. Getting the curves to flow and swoop across the quilt was a challenge. I made a curved template to help me repeat the curves – and there was quite a lot of unpicking needed to get the lines to match up!
I added some lines of hand quilting to create texture and emphasise the curves.
Inspired by Anthony Frost – Judith Venning

I was inspired by the paintings of Anthony Frost, a Cornish artist who experiments with blocks of bright colour. I was also inspired by Pippa Eccles Armbrester, who uses colour blocks in her modern quilts. My design is similar to her quilt, Candyland.
I wasn’t sure how to securely anchor the applique, so chose to outline edges with hand stitching
